How to run TikTok ads in Nigeria

8 min read · Updated 29 July 2026

TikTok has become a serious sales channel for Nigerian businesses, and it is still cheaper to reach people there than on Facebook or Instagram in most categories. But it punishes anyone who treats it like Facebook. Ads that look like ads get scrolled past instantly.

Here is how to set up properly, and more importantly, how to make something people will actually watch.

Before you open Ads Manager

Three things to sort out first:

Setting up your first campaign

Step 1 — Create your ad account

Go to TikTok Ads Manager and register your business. You will be asked for your business name, country and industry. Pick the industry that genuinely matches what you sell — it affects how TikTok categorises and delivers your ads.

Step 2 — Choose your objective

You will see options grouped under awareness, consideration and conversion. For most small businesses starting out:

Do not pick Reach or Video Views as your first campaign unless brand awareness genuinely is your goal. Cheap views feel good and sell nothing.

Step 3 — Set your audience

Resist the urge to narrow aggressively. TikTok's delivery system is good at finding buyers if you give it room. Start with:

Over-targeting is the most common beginner error. A tight audience plus a small budget means TikTok never gathers enough data to optimise.

Step 4 — Budget and schedule

Set a daily budget you can sustain for at least seven days. Running ₦20,000 in one day teaches you far less than the same amount spread across a week, because the system needs time to learn.

Schedule your ads to run continuously at first. Dayparting is an optimisation for later, once you know when your buyers actually convert.

Step 5 — Upload your creative

Vertical, full screen, 9:16. Sound on. Captions burned in — a large share of viewers watch muted, and TikTok's auto-captions are unreliable with Nigerian accents.

What actually works creatively

This is where campaigns are won or lost. TikTok is not a billboard, it is a feed of things people chose to watch.

The first two seconds decide everything

You need motion, a face, or a question immediately. No logo intro. No slow pan. No "Hello and welcome to our page". By the time your intro finishes, they are gone.

Make it look like content, not an advert

The best-performing ads for Nigerian small businesses tend to be:

Shoot on your phone

Polished studio production performs worse on TikTok. It signals "advert" and triggers the scroll. A clear phone video with good daylight and honest speech will beat an expensive one most of the time.

Speak the way your customer speaks

If your buyers speak Pidgin, use Pidgin. Trying to sound corporate to a market audience creates distance exactly when you need trust.

Reading your results

After a week, look at these before touching anything:

MetricWhat it tells you
Cost per resultWhether this is economically viable at all
CTR (click-through rate)Whether the creative is compelling
Video watch rateWhether your hook works — check the 3-second and 6-second drop-off
Conversion rate after the clickWhether your landing page or WhatsApp flow is the problem

A useful diagnostic: low watch rate means fix the hook. High watch rate but low clicks means fix the offer. Good clicks but no sales means fix what happens after the click. Each symptom points somewhere different.

Common mistakes

Should you use TikTok at all?

Be honest about your buyer. TikTok skews younger, though the Nigerian user base has broadened considerably. It works well for fashion, food, gadgets, beauty, services with visible results, and anything with a demonstration. It works less well for products bought by older decision-makers or in a purely professional context.

If your buyers are not there, a cheaper cost per click is meaningless.
