Troubleshooting
Why your ads are not converting
You spent money. You got reach, maybe even clicks. But no sales. Before you increase the budget or blame the algorithm, work through this in order — because the fix depends entirely on where people are dropping off.
First, find where the leak is
Open Ads Manager and look at the funnel:
| Symptom | The problem is almost certainly |
|---|---|
| Low reach, low everything | Budget too small, or audience too narrow |
| Good reach, few clicks | Your creative or offer |
| Good clicks, no sales | What happens after the click |
| Sales, but you lose money | Pricing and margin, not advertising |
Diagnosing this correctly saves you from fixing the wrong thing, which is how most ad budgets get wasted.
Problem 1: Your creative does not stop the scroll
This is the most common cause by a wide margin.
People scroll fast. Your image or first video second must interrupt that. Most failing ads share the same faults:
- Photo taken in poor light, or at night under a bulb
- Cluttered background — the product competes with everything around it
- Too far away, so the product is small in frame
- Text crammed over the image so nothing is readable
- Generic stock imagery that could belong to any business
The fix: reshoot in daylight against a plain background, close to the product, showing it clearly. This costs nothing and routinely produces the largest single improvement in results.
Problem 2: Your offer is not clear in two seconds
Somebody seeing your ad for the first time knows nothing about you. If they cannot tell instantly what you sell, what it costs, and why it is worth having, they scroll.
Test it: show your ad to someone who does not know your business, for two seconds. Ask them what you sell. If they hesitate, that is your answer.
The fix: lead with the specific thing and the specific benefit. "Brand new Daylong Dilo bike, 6-month engine warranty, ₦— , Sagamu" beats "Quality motorcycles for all your transportation needs" every time. Specificity reads as competence. Vagueness reads as a scam.
Problem 3: You are on the wrong platform
Sometimes the ad is fine and the audience simply is not there. If your buyers are 45-year-old business owners, TikTok will disappoint you no matter how good your video is. If they are 22-year-old students, Facebook may be the wrong room.
The fix: describe your actual buyer honestly — age, location, income, how they spend time online — then choose the platform that matches, rather than the one you personally use.
Problem 4: The path after the click is broken
People clicked. Then what?
- Does your page load fast on mobile data outside a city?
- Does the WhatsApp link actually open a chat with a pre-filled message?
- Is the price visible, or must they ask?
- Do you reply quickly, or hours later when they have moved on?
- Is there any proof you are real — reviews, photos, a location, a phone number?
The fix: click your own ad on your own phone, on mobile data, and go through the whole journey as a stranger would. Most people never do this, and most people find something broken when they do.
Problem 5: You optimised for the wrong thing
If you selected Engagement, Facebook finds people who like and comment. Those people are not buyers — they are engagers. Facebook did exactly what you asked.
The fix: optimise for the outcome you actually want. Messages if you sell by conversation. Conversions if you have the Pixel installed. Leads if you are collecting contacts.
Problem 6: You switched it off too early
Meta's system needs a learning period. The first few days are usually the worst days, and results commonly improve once it identifies who responds.
The fix: commit to seven days minimum without edits. Every change restarts learning and resets your spend to zero progress.
Problem 7: There is no trust
Nigerian buyers are cautious online, and rightly so. If your page has three posts, no reviews, no address and no face, a stranger will not send you money.
The fix: post consistently, show real customers with their permission, show yourself, show your location, show orders being packed and delivered. Trust is a prerequisite for advertising, not a result of it.
The order to fix things in
- Creative — cheapest to change, biggest impact
- Offer clarity — free to change, second biggest impact
- The path after the click — usually a quick fix once you look
- Objective — one setting
- Platform — bigger decision, make it deliberately
- Budget — last, never first
Most people start at six and work upward. That is precisely backwards, and it is why they spend more money to get the same disappointing result.
